Staples for the non-binary wardrobe

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

If you’re searching for a way to make your wardrobe more androgynous, you’ve come to the right place! From accessories to shoes-- this article’s got it all. While some pieces are not inherently gender neutral, styling can help make them appear to be. If you haven’t yet and are confused on the idea of being non-binary vs. being androgynous, check out my other article, What Does Non-Binary Mean Anyways?

For starters, accessories are vital to almost any outfit; they can either bring together a whole look or make it look mismatched. Necklaces, particularly thicker chains, are a great way to bring together an outfit. Although traditionally more feminine, they provide a source of interest. This is also why stud earrings can be considered androgynous, depending on where on the ear they are placed. If you’re all for kitsch fashion statements, you might want to consider tying together your outfit with statement accessories, like fanny-packs or bold sunglasses. For those wishing to not stand out as much, bracelets are often small, but can make a big addition to any look. Belts also are generally adaptable, ranging from thin and dainty to bulkier ones. Jackets are also a great way to provide an interest factor-- bomber jackets are the perfect combination of edgy and polished, and denim jackets are appropriate for almost any casual outfit. The baggier the jacket, the more casual it tends to be.

If accessories aren’t exactly your cup of tea, different tops are versatile and easy to style. For a cozier look, turtlenecks are ideal. Depending on your tastes, they also come in many styles-- cropped, extra long, and even short-sleeved! For a look just as cozy, plain, baggy T-shirts can often come in handy. If you’re looking for a more formal look, collared shirts are the way to go, and with a little extra of effort, you can mix and match versions with different patterns.

Pants come in many different shapes and styles, which is perfect for any androgynous wardrobe. Jeans are generally more casual, but there is a large range of the styles and washes. Dark wash jeans are typically easier to style than lighter washes, but this still leaves many options. Should you choose skinny jeans or bootcut? Long, or short jeans? The answer is simple; buy whatever you see yourself being most confident in. This seems very vague, but fashion is subjective and you should wear whatever makes you happy. To continue, khakis are also a great way to start off your non-binary wardrobe. They can be dressed up and dressed down to fit whatever look you have in mind! Joggers are comfy and can look great when styled with confidence, too. In the summer it can be hard to dress in long pants all summer, so cotton shorts can be a nice variation! The best length to have, for the sake of versatility, is right above the knee.

Shoes are some of the best ways to create unity within your outfit, because of the sheer variety there is when choosing a pair. Chunky sneakers are not everyone’s cup of tea, but if they’re yours then Fila Disruptors might be something to add to your shopping cart. If canvas sneakers are more your style, then a colorful pair of Vans could help your outfit come together. These two styles are both comfortable, but also tie outfits together in different ways. While Fila Disruptors are classic and don’t traditionally come in many colors, lately there have been many revivals of the style, ranging from velour to customizable patch placement. Similarly, Vans have always been a staple in the wardrobes of people, earning their spot because of their casual nature. More formal shoes can also be incorporated into Non-Binary closets. If you’re not sure where to grab a nice pair of dress shoes, Clark’s has a style for everyone. A general recommendation for dress shoes is that neutrals are more versatile than, say, a bright blue.

Although I hope my ideas were helpful, you should ultimately take my advice with a grain of salt; if you know you don’t like a certain style, don’t feel obligated to dress that way. Fashion is what you make of it, so you might as well have fun while experimenting!
