4 Non Binary Clothing Brands that are Changing the way we View Gender in Fashion

Throughout history, fashion has been defined into two groups: Men’s and Women’s fashion. When you walk into a typical store, you are met with a choice: left or right. In the 21st century, gender non-binary fashion has risen in popularity and has begun to alter society’s outlook on fashion, changing the way we express and present ourselves to the world. Gender non-binary fashion, in essence, is self-expression without the need and requirement of conforming to society’s gender roles. When gender is taken out of the equation, one is able to express themselves without labels. Although the conversation has just begun, many up and coming clothing brands strive to take away labels and rebrand the way we dress.

Official rebrand, by designer MI Leggett, describes their clothing as “gender-free”. This brand upcycles old clothing and through drawing and painting and creates gender non-binary fashion-- “breathing new life into what was once considered waste.” Personally, this is one of my favorite brands because of their inclusive message and attention to detail.

Chnge is a street style non-binary fashion brand that mainly sells graphic tees and sweatshirts. Each article is packed with meaning and allows the wearer to express their views on society. Chnge strives to make an impact on the world through each purchase. They pledge to use sustainable materials in their products, in an effort to put the planet before profits. Chnge believes that it is up to the consumer to be the change in the world. “Every purchase is a vote.”

Artist Michael G. Simpson creates works of art through his clothing. Each piece is original and handmade, packed with a powerful message. Combining culture and poetic language, Michael creates one of a kind clothing with meaning. Although Writing’s from Michael’s main focus is the message of the clothing, the brand is gender non-binary, and each piece is designed without gender in mind.

One DNA is a minimalistic gender-neutral brand based in New York. Their message is simple: all genders, shapes, sizes, and races are equal. Their designers strive to “break down the barrier between womenswear and menswear without sacrificing style.” Their apparel focuses on basics and simplicity.
