INSTAGRAM AND THE FASHION INDUSTRY

By Ava Finegold

At this point in time, it is not enough to just be known. To get there, Instagram and other forms of social media are the stepping stones to being “known” on social media.

“Influencer” is a familiar title by now. Girls are able to be plucked off Instagram and brought into the world of fashion in just a direct message.

Getting brand exposure just means getting the most likes out of the thousands of upcoming brands. These techniques to getting known are relatively new though, and Instagram has helped the fashion industry bloom.

With the rise of influencers, where do runway models fit in? “Less traditional” looking models are able to find footing in the modeling industry through Instagram and gain their own following. “Influencer” is a common term, with their job being Instagram. When the modeling industry and influencer worlds collide, what is still considered fashion?

With some influencers, there are cases of photoshop mishaps, awkward runway walks, and drama. Yet, people are finally able to see themselves through these influencers. Instagram gives people the ability to make themselves known without being signed to an actual modeling agency. And with that, uniqueness is what some high fashion brands are now looking for.

Another plus to social media is the exposure smaller brands might not usually get. A brand called “Urban Sophistication” has been able to create its own well-known brand because of Instagram. “Social Media seriously harms your mental health” cases are everywhere, from the Kardashian-Jenners and the Hadids. Even Kylie Jenner’s own brand, “Kylie Cosmetics” has gained its following through her social media.

The fashion industry is always evolving, and Instagram is just one part of it. There may be many downsides to social media, but the effect it’s had on fashion is definitely a plus.
