Fashion & Music

By Anoosha Barua

A curated list of Music’s trendsetters.

Solange Knowles:

In the past few years, Solange had transformed before our very eyes. Specific colors and textures return throughout her fashion repertoire. Golden yellows, nudes, neutrals, and lavenders, mixed with ruffles, pleats, shags, and puffs. Her confidence has grown throughout the years, adding bright colors and statement pieces to her catalog of clothes. No longer is she known merely as Beyoncé’s little sister, but for her own individuality, talent, style, and flare.

Kanye West:

Kanye West has grown from “solely” a rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer, to both an entrepreneur and fashion designer as well. Much like his music, his style spans a broad range and embodies a blend of different influences: industrial, gospel, baroque pop, and rock being some of them.

SZA:

One of the particularly impressive things about SZA’s style is how she doesn’t solely rely on designer and name brands --although it most-certainly is available to her. She just wears a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, and manages to look chic. Her style doesn’t make you want to redo your whole wardrobe, but instead, take a closer look in your closet and see what your missing.

Pharrell Williams:

Pharrell’s style is unparalleled and has been stylish throughout his whole career, changing and developing, just as he does with his music. From partnering with Woolworths to “help make sustainability cool” to Louis Vuitton, Adidas Originals, Ladurée, and Moncler, Pharrell has been busy collaborating with the world’s biggest fashion, art, beauty, food, and lifestyle companies.

Rihanna:

Everyone knows Rihanna is a Style Icon; the CFDA has already ruled it. Her fashion embodies her risk-taking and hit-making. As people say, “it’s ugly until Rihanna says it’s not.” Leave it to this modern fashion icon to pair thigh-high Manolos under only a t-shirt, a sheer dress with nothing underneath, or a graphic t-shirt with a silk dress and fur.

Harry Styles:

Seen before only as a teen heart-throb and boyband member, Harry Styles has now become a major fashion personality. He channels gender fluidity and ambiguity from rock stars of the past, mostly Mick Jagger. His transition from a pop star to an icon is evident in his style, and designers who work with him compliment his ability to communicate through fashion, really using it as an expression of his values: acceptance, kindness, openness.

Lana del Rey:

Lana del Rey’s unique mix of Bewitching Songstress, California Pop Star, and 60s pin-up girl are highlighted in her classic nude lip, 60s hairdos, and flowy dresses. Her looks are always effortlessly cool and exude an enchanting element, much like her music, which, like a siren call, can lure any listener in.

ASAP Rocky:

ASAP Rocky’s often unpredictable fashion makes it nearly impossible to pinpoint his style, which is known to be individual, complex, original, and often multi-layered to achieve a unique, eccentric and clean look.
